BX ARCO Australia Door Systems

Project Overview

Client: BMI Group

Contractor: Prekaro

Project Location: Redbank Plains, Queensland

Scope: BX ARCO Australia Door Systems supplied and installed 18 x Q100 roller shutters for a major resource recovery centre, including six large-format doors measuring approximately 13m high and 12 additional doors at 5m x 5m.

The six larger doors featured 1.2mm Q100 slats, while the 12 smaller doors incorporated 1mm Q100 slats. The 13m-high doors were designed to allow trucks to exit the facility with their tippers raised, supporting safer vehicle movement, reducing operational time and improving overall site efficiency.

The project presented several unique engineering challenges due to the scale of the doors and the constraints of the building structure. BX ARCO Australia Door Systems developed customised solutions to ensure reliable operation within the available installation space.

Challenges & Solutions

Accommodating 13m-High Door Openings

One of the standout features of the project was the requirement for six doors to reach approximately 13m in height. The doors needed to provide sufficient clearance for trucks to exit the resource recovery facility with their tippers raised.

This required a high-performance roller shutter solution capable of operating reliably at an exceptional height while supporting the facility’s day-to-day vehicle movements.

Overcoming Limited Installation Clearance

The building’s steelwork was not completely flush, creating very limited clearance between the shutter chain and drum. This presented a potential risk of rubbing during operation.

To overcome this challenge, BX ARCO Australia Door Systems designed and installed specially engineered plates to provide the required clearance and prevent interference between the components, ensuring reliable and consistent door operation.

Minimising Potential Failure Points

Given the scale and application of the doors, reducing potential mechanical failure points was an important consideration.

The six large shutters were manufactured without springs, helping minimise components that could potentially fail and providing a configuration suited to the specific requirements of the project.

Enhancing Safety

With doors operating at approximately 13m high, preventing uncontrolled movement in the event of mechanical failure was a key safety consideration.

Each door was fitted with a safety brake designed to prevent free-fall, providing an additional layer of protection for personnel and equipment within the facility.

Outcomes

The successful delivery of 18 x Q100 roller shutters, including six 13m-high doors, demonstrates BX ARCO Australia Door Systems’ ability to engineer customised industrial door solutions for challenging applications.

The project required more than a standard roller shutter installation, with customised engineering required to overcome restricted component clearances and the significant height of the doors.

By combining Q100 roller shutter technology, custom-engineered installation plates, springless construction and safety brakes, BX ARCO Australia Door Systems delivered a solution designed to support safe vehicle movement, minimise operational downtime and improve efficiency within the resource recovery facility.

The project highlights BX ARCO Australia Door Systems’ capability to deliver bespoke industrial door solutions for complex infrastructure and high-clearance applications, where standard door configurations may not meet the specific requirements of the site.
